So first things first, it's a walking sim. If you don't like walking sims, then save yourself the aggravation of playing one and save us all the aggravation of having to read your negative review about how it's only two hours long and 'not even a real game.' Call it what you will: Game, Walking Sim, Interactive Media. It doesn't matter. It's the quality of the art that you should be judging. That's the only thing that should matter.
So now that that's out of the way: Gone Home is fucking excellent. I'd honestly rather not divulge any details on the story, but I will tell you what kind of experience your looking at so you can decide for yourself if it's for you.
You'll like it if you like:
-Interactive storytelling. Seriously there is so much detail and interactivity. There's a core story that's being told to you verbally, but you get to intimately know the lives of all of the characters just by poking around and interacting with the environment.
-That feelsy shit. As much as I don't like using that term, I can't think of another word. Maybe 'bittersweet' would be a good one, anyhow, yeah, Gone Home made me feel things. It really succeeded at pulling me in and making me care about it's characters.
-A good story. Or maybe it's more the presentation. Regardless, Gone Home works really well narratively. The story isn't anything complex, but the way the story is told and paced out is extremely effective and very emotionally poignant.
You won't like it if you don't like
-Games without challenging gameplay. There aren't really any puzzles beyond just making sure to check everything in your path. It's a narrative experience and it doesn't ask much of you mechanically
-Short run times. This game took me about 2 hours to get through. I didn't 100% it, but I didn't feel like I missed anything that important narratively. Yes, it's $15. Which is a little over what you'd pay to go see a movie. But if getting a lot of hours per dollar is that important to you, you might want to skip this one
-Walking Sims. For God's sake if you're one of those anti-walking sim people just skip this game for everyone's sake.
So yeah, if this sounds like the kind of thing you'd enjoy, definitely give it a go. Personally I loved it enough that it gets a 10/10 for me.
